Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
For many, many years it has been a tradition in Germany to decorate the Christmas tree with a ball and to use …air-filled (leather) balls for ball games.
For us structural engineers, the „air-filled ball“ is a „pressure vessel“ that has been relatively easy to calculate analytically for 150 years thanks to the equations developed by the French mathematician Gabriel Lame.
Since all (play)balls are quite „thin-walled“, their design is even possible „by hand“ using the „boiler formula“, which is somewhat simplified for the practitioner.
But not only that.
Handballs and footballs in particular have a very uniform „mesh structure“, which could be used as a basis for numerical models.
And last but not least, the „round has to go into the square“ (mesh).
But as Mephisto already philosophised in Goethe’s „Faust“:
„…Grey, dear friend, is all theory, and green the golden tree of life….“
And so, at the end of this year, we are once again devoting ourselves to the really „important things in life“ and have asked our expert to take an artistic look at the subject.
In contrast to the German teams that were not exactly successful this year in dealing with football, handball, basketball and volleyball, her handling of balls and spheres is very successful for our taste.
But judge for yourself.
„The eye sees what it seeks“!
With this quotation from the Palatinate landscape painter and impressionist Max Slevogt, who was born more than 150 years ago, we wish you a lot of fun discovering, contemplative hours with your family, friends and acquaintances.
Make the turn of the year a „round thing“ and, like us, „take it easy“ for a few days.
From 05 January 2023 you can „calculate with us“ again.
But above all, stay healthy! Your „Simulants from the Agger Beach“.
