Analysis of double-walled synthesis gas pipes for a plant in Sweden

After completing the dimensioning of the pressure parts for stationary internal and external pressure loads, LES GmbH was commissioned to create additional EN13480-3 and ANSI B31.3-compliant flexibility calculations to assess the expansion behavior for a double-walled synthesis gas pipeline planned for a chemical plant in southern Sweden. Due to the rather long straight pipe sections with considerable differences in the metal temperature of the inner and outer pipes, compensating for the expansion differences on the double-walled pipe bends proved to be extremely problematic.

Ultimately, however, LES GmbH succeeded in developing a practical load transfer and expansion concept for the specified metal temperatures and the maximum permissible pipe connection loads, even without the use of expansion joints, and in proposing suitable spring and constant hangers to the client
